Aleutian Museum of Natural History

When you will visit the Commander Islands you can see so many amazing things: colonies of marine birds and fur seals with sea lions, curious sea otters and flower seals, which will be swimming towards to you

 And of course, you will be coming to the Vitus Bering grave, who was a Leader of the Second Kamchatka Expedition. Staying beside this small point of the winters camp of Bearings Expedition you will definitely touch the ancient history of his voyage into the Northern Pacific

In the foreground - the Aleutian study of local lore museum

The high light at the local museum is the giant skeleton of the Sea Cow. Unfortunately, its the most of the sadness evidence about aggressive behavior of the people. This huge, but very peaceful animal was hunting and killing for the twenty-seven years after discovery of the Commander Islands in 1741.

The staff from the local museum, with deep knowledge and real existents, tell you some unbelievable stories about Northern Pacific Robinzon named Ykov Minkov, who has been living alone on the Bering Island for the seven years in the beginning of the XIX century.

You will also hearing the story about colonization the Commander Islands. Actually this Islands just the last reminders from the big Russian - American Company, which was selling Alaska and Aleutian Islands to the USA in 1867.

In the local Nikolskoe village we will easily notice the off springs of the first inhabitants of the Commander Islands Aleuts, Creoles, Eskimos, Russians, Gypsy All together they form

some unique culture and genetic biodiversity.

By the way, only in Nikolskoe village you will find out a several buildings,which were constructed by an American Company Gudchinson & Co. in the beginning of XIX century. The museum itself has been organized in the one of them.

On the first floor of the museum you will see a few cannons and some other staff from the vessel and winter's camp of Vitus Bering expedition. Finally, you can observe a lot of paintings of the new appearance of the captain commander Vitus Bering.It was possible after recovering his face from the skull and re-burred his skeleton to the more safety place at the Commander Bay.

Some special place at the museum deducted a history of Christianity on the Northern Pacific.

There is a Bible in Russian, which was translated by Inokentiy Viniaminov, who of the end of his life was a Heard of Russian Orthodox Church. But from his efforts and kindness towards to the aboriginal people they accept the Christianity on the Alaska and the Islands in early XVIII century.

Farthermore, there is a pritty exebition of diffrent kind of figurins from the local stones and bones of marine mammals, some baskets made from the grass, traditional close of the Aleuts people.
